April Newsletter - We are open for the season!
Hey everybody… guess what… we’re open for the season. According to everyone who has come in since Friday, it is not spring until Oceanview opens its doors… so hip-hip hooray, spring has arrived.
There are so many new exciting things at the garden centre this year , we could hardly wait to tell you about them. We have a line of Brazilian hammocks that are not only beautiful but very durable. We even have swinging chairs that are sooo comfortable.
We have many new planters this year including some made of light weight fiberglass coated to look like real granite. Others are made to look like a wood grain and Susan’s favorites are the ones that look like real tree stumps.
We have a loveseat and chair set made of fiberglass but coated to look like granite, a bit pricey but a real conversation piece.
We have a line of garden ornaments called Geeky Beaks that we can’t even begin to describe; you’ll just have to come see for yourselves.
As you stroll around you won’t be able to miss the gorgeous bronze statuary: mermaids, frogs and a large piece of a boy relaxing on a tree branch enjoying a day of fishing, several cranes, and a few more specially chosen pieces.
We are carrying lots of new garden products: organic fertilizers, environmentally friendly pesticides, slow release fertilizers, hose-end cinch bug killer, and super size Rhododendron food, just to name a few.
We were so pleased with the Fafard line of soils last year, that we have expanded the line to include a low ph soil for Rhododendrons, a soil perfectly formulated for roses and one for perennials. The extensive line will be listed and described on our new website which should be up and running in a couple of weeks.
Speaking of the website, our entire inventory will be listed on it so you will be able to browse through to see all of the plants that we have brought in for the season. (You will have to call for availability if there is something specific that you want). Don’t forget if there is something we don’t have we can probably bring it in for you.
Last but not least, we have added Burpee seeds to our usual brands. It is the first time Burpee seeds have been offered in Canada. They have been #1 in the States for 125 years.
Happy gardening… See you soon.
Super Special for April: Matchpoint & Stargazer Lily bulbs only $.99

February/March Newsletter
As the snowfalls and the winter winds blow one can’t help but to dream of spring. February is a great month to do those rainy day chores such as cleaning your gardening tools, sharpening your pruning gear and if you’re a gardener who starts their own transplants February is a great month to write out a seeding schedule, set up grow lights, etc.
Cleaning your trowels, cultivators and shovels is a great preventive for transferring insects and diseases from one season into the next. Once the tools are thoroughly cleaned with soap and water they should have a ten minute dip in a bleach solution (one part bleach to nine parts water). Once they have dried completely they should be oiled, this will help extend the life of the tools.
Sharpening your pruning tools, loppers, shears, hand pruners etc. will get you off to a flying start in the spring. First of all sharp tools prevent injury to the tree or shrub you are pruning. Cutting with sharp tools also takes less effort from you decreasing your risk of hand or wrist injury. It wouldn’t hurt sharpen the edges of your trowels and shovels while your at it.
It may be a little too soon to actually start your transplants but checking the seed packages for maturity times and writing out a schedule will certainly work to your advantage. There is nothing worse then seedling ten inches tall and a risk of frost for the next two weeks.
As for the garden center there are all kinds of exciting things that happen during late February and March. The greenhouses are keeping the tropicals nice and warm, what an experience to walk in there on a cold day and feel the warmth and see all the lush green foliage surrounding you. We are anxiously awaiting our first shipment of annual plugs (rooted cuttings) which we will immediately plant in four inch pots to later be planted into hanging baskets for Mothers Day. Around mid March all of the other annuals and perennial plugs will arrive, along with thousands of bareroot perennials and 750 bareroot roses. It is a very busy time for us but one thing is for sure, once those plants start coming spring is not far off so don’t despair no matter how cold it is or how much snow falls spring really is just around the corner.

Garden Resolutions for 2008
Even though the New Year has passed, it is never too late to make a resolution. Garden resolutions can be fun and easy. Most resolutions fail because people set their expectations too high. Here are a few suggestions that will not only benefit you but will also benefit the little creatures in your garden.
Why not hang a bat house (you can build one yourself), a single bat can eat a thousand mosquitoes a day or put a toad house in your garden. Toads eat tons of bugs.
Decide that this is going to be the year that you finally feed and nourish all those perennials in your garden with that mushroom compost you’ve heard so much about (available at Oceanview Garden Centre and Landscaping). Then once you’ve finished applying the compost reward yourself with that newly introduced perennial you’ve been eyeing but wouldn’t spend the money on.
Resolve to plant a tree in memory of someone you’ve lost.
Bite the bullet and actually attend that free gardening workshop that you signed up for then take one thing that you learned from it and use it to benefit your garden.
Put in a hummingbird garden, you’ll be amazed how fast these little creatures will find it. Ask our knowledgeable staff what plants are best.
If you want to be really ambitious decide to put in your very own organic vegetable patch. You will be so pleased with your produce and how good you will feel with the knowledge that you did it yourself you will do it every single year.
The list of garden resolutions is limited only to your imagination but whatever you decide make it doable and stick with it.
Good Luck and Happy Gardening!
